JOEL Ward has revealed he chose Crystal Palace over Ipswich Town and Leeds United because of the positiveness and drive of Eagles boss Dougie Freedman.

Paul Jewell and Neil Warnock might have the edge on Freedman in terms of experience, but Town’s top target was persuaded to join the South London club after his dealings with the Palace manager.

After signing for £400,000 on a four-year deal, Ward told This is Local London: “I met Dougie on a couple of occasions and he is very positive and very driven about where he wants the club to go.

“He has got a vision for the club and he wants to take it forward and take it to the Premier League.

“He is big on personal development and making players the best they can be and as a player that is what you look for in a manager.

“He is very infectious in his beliefs and where he wants to take the club and its players. With the way the manger wants to play, Palace is a club going places.

“I am really happy with how everything has gone and I am looking forward to starting a new chapter with Crystal Palace – it is exciting to see what it will bring.”

  • Could we just move on, please? The guy has joined a well established club on the right side of London in relation to his home town. Having made his decision he is hardly going to make negative remarks about the manager!

  • a manager promoted from within the club seems like an idea to me,something we should be trying before the end of the season.

  • I'm awaiting Cyril's comment stating the EADT are lying again and the comments made by Ward are created by some neo-Jewell-hating, anti-liverpudlianesque, commie-loving scribes. The fact is- and it is a fact echoed by Jewell himself- PJ has made way too many mistakes over the last 18 months and hasn't moved Ipswich forward any noticeable amount in that time (and that, imo, is being generous). Ward probably noticed this too- after all, he has stated that Palace is a club he considers 'going places'. By reference this indicates that he, a professional in the game, feels we aren't (or are, but to a lesser extent). I'm not going to cry that we didn't sign him, but it is another indication as to how uninspiring Jewell is...

  • Palace going somewhere ?? Last time i looked they were a mid table side like us . He went because he only wanted to play in one position at Right back . Jewell would of been playing him all over . Edwards cant do anything wrong so he (Ward ) wouldnt of had a chance . Last season i saw Edwards getting sucked in to more of a centre half position which left us exposed on many occasion on the attacking left side . He is not and never will be a right back !!!!. Another decent player gone but hopefully a good one walking in ( Hewitt ) although i hear he has injury problems at only 18 !!
