YOUNG Welsh international right-back Elliott Hewitt should become Paul Jewell’s first signing of the summer as early as tomorrow.

We understand an undisclosed fee has been agreed for the 17-year-old Macclesfield defender and he is set to arrive in Suffolk to undergo a medical.

Subject to him passing that with no problems, he will be unveiled as an Ipswich Town player, possibly tomorrow.

After missing out on Joel Ward – with the Portsmouth man set to complete his switch to Crystal Palace later today – Jewell has turned his attentions to the Welsh Under-21 international who made 19 appearances for the Silkmen last season.

With Town relegated from League Two, Hewitt, who was linked with Premier League sides earlier in the season, was always likely to move on and it seems like a switch to Portman Road could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

It comes as Town are again linked with a move for 27-year-old Dundee United midfielder Scott Robertson, although we understand any deal is not as far along as reports in Scotland have suggested.

  • Old Timer, you're wasting your time with Cyril as he has a very 'convenient memory' and an inbuilt dislike of EADT journos. He has the choice of reading OR not reading the EADT but it gives him something to do as he continually defends PJ. You must understand that there is only one opinion as far as Cyril is concerned and that is those who care about the club and say so with good reasons are construed as 'moaners', 'whingers' and 'negative' not positive and often wrong like Cyril ( and Tom)

  • Cyril - you accuse others of 'not understanding' - then offer Smith as proof of your flawed reasoning !!!!!!!! The boy was treated appaulingly by Jewell during the early part of the season & it was only when other options run out that he reluctantly gave him another chance. And all this for a young lad who wanted to play for Ipswich & on at least one occassion travelled 12,000 miles to do so. Had the Dads Army dream of Jewell not failed so badly then Ingimarsson Sonko or some loanee would still have been preferrred to Smith who got his chance by default. Yes he did become established by the end of the season but still stalled on signing a new contract - remembering presumably how badly he had been treated earlier in the season. Before you accuse people of a lack of understanding you really should think your argument through & try & find a more apt example than one which pretty much proves the opposite.

  • I agree with earlier comment that Paul Jewel has taken far to much flack this last season. It is time we got behind him; he has been loyal in stating he is in this for the long term. He does have the ambition clearly for ITFC as it is well documented he is financial secure and does not need to work, thanks to success in his earlier management career (apart from Derby, no crime). Remember David Whelan (Wigan) would have him back tomorrow, given what he did there, and Whelan is one of best chairman about. Briefly on the lack of transfer activity I believe a lot this is down to Clegg and his in flexibility having never run a football club before, as there is no doubt PJ has indentified some very realistic ‘hungry’ targets.

  • What has happened to the 'strong spine' of the team that Jewell was muttering on about two weeks ago ? Has he forgotten that he needs a tall No1 goalkeeper, a strong tall centre back and a tall centre foward ? Still Rome wasn't built in a day and Jewell wasn't on the pay roll !!!!!

  • But will he be better than the right back Carlos has developed into?

  • Exactly the sort of player we should be targeting. Young, talented and relatively cheap. lets hope it's the first of many of it's kind. No more Premiership has-beens looking for a last payday.

  • Well spartacus, we all expected to hear from you, just Brian and Kevin to follow. You have never understood if they were good enough they would have earned their chance as Smith did.

  • Yes let's hope this signifies that the penny has dropped with Jewell & he is now after young hungry players rather than those who are looking for a big pay day. If only I could believe that signing a 17 year old meant that Jewell was also prepared to give our own youths a chance then all might not be lost.

  • Like a lot of people I am frustrated with the lack of movement on the recruitment side, I fail however to see the nessesity of taking every chance to have a dig at our manager with every story that comes along. Give the bloke a break, I will hold my hands up if it turns really sour for us and I'll say I was wrong, but I see Paul Jewl as the man to take our club forward instead of digging at him at every oppitunity why not give the bloke a chance after all we gave George Burley five years and he delivered in the end. Our club is where it is due to our previous manager and not the current one. It would be nice to read peoples opinions without the need to use every story as yet another excuse to slate our manager. COME ON YOU BLUES!

  • Lets hope he gets the opportunities he will need to develop. If he does, all good, but to be fair it would be against much of what we have seen in the last 18 months... Lets hope Jewell has learnt.

  • If it's anything like the normal ITFC transfer news, he will need longer to think about the move and in a months time will have signed for someone else! For those without prior knowledge, it would help if you reported on who the Silkmen are!

  • I hope the young man gets a fair crack of the whip and proves an inspired buy. I'm sure there's no significance in the fact that he has been signed from the team that finished 92nd in the league and hardly won a match since Christmas.
