IPSWICH Town manager PaulJewell will prioritise raw physical attributes when searching for new players this summer.

After his side ended the 2011/12 season placed 15th in the Championship table – their equal lowest Football League finish since the 50s – the Blues boss immediately labelled the spine of his side ‘powder puff’.

And not only would he prefer his reinforcements to be “young and hungry”, he also wants them to be tall, powerful and speedy.

“We need strong, athletic players who can add to what we have got,” said Jewell, who currently only has four players 6ft or taller in his squad (see below). “We need to be bigger. We have to be faster – what stands out in our team is that we lack pace all over the park. We need some dynamic players.

“It is not easy to find as every manager in the Championship is searching for the same player. We have to try and think out the box. There are one or two we think we might have a chance of getting but we don’t want that to get out.”

Jewell played the powerful duo of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Daryl Murphy on the wings for the majority of the second half of the season, preferring their physical presence to the direct-running of the more diminutive Josh Carson.

“Josh played well against Blackpool,” said Jewell, who has conceded he is unlikely to sign Murphy after his season-long loan spell from Celtic. “But when we went to Leeds, Daryl Murphy gave us an extra dimension with his height.

“Josh burst onto the scene last year and did very well. Then he came back not in the best of shape in pre-season. I don’t think the contract helped him either as it ran on a little bit. He has got better as the season has gone on but he is still only 19 and he has been more of an impact player.

“We have Jay Emmanuel-Thomas but he needs to work in the air.”

Jewell added: “I have always said I like 4-4-2 but since I have been here I have not played it too often. I played 4-3-3 last season but it is all about getting the personnel. I would like two players who can get down the line and cross the ball.”

  • Robin van Persie & Lionel Messi would not fit the bill in Paul Jewells new look Town squad. Byron Lawrence & Luke Hyam will also need to look for a new employer for next season.

  • Kevin, "does he really have no idea how foolish they make him look" ? NO because if you will excuse me repeating a favorite phrase " there are none so blind as those who do not want to see" and as you well know this also applies to several of the 'positive' supporters' on this site !!!!!!!

  • Me thinks most of the daft dribble on here comes from the same old posters who again are looking to deflect potential players away from the club so they can get their agenda of getting rid of jewell fulfilled.

  • Thank god Paul Jewell had no hand in Lionel Messi's footballing education - Paul Jewell well below average as a player himself and well below average as a manager.

  • What we need Mr. Jewell are players that are more consistent, size is no good if you are a useless lump. we need a consistent goalkeeper, consistent defenders, midfield and attack. Something sadly missing this last season. Are there really that many Town fans who look forward with relish at the new coming season. We all love the game, even with it's up's and down's but somehow the body language exuding from PR already seems very negative. "We won't be spending big" "Our squad will be quite small" "We won't be paying top wages" all this against a backdrop of the need for half a dozen players. Sorry, but "Get real". I'm afraid that I predict, at best, a top ten position. I really hope I'm wrong.

  • Well small, slow, old & weak didn't work - so by a process of elimination big, fast, strong & athletic has got to be worth a try ?????????? The mans mind is like a rapier !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Who , exactly , does he think he is going to sign ?? footballers are not daft , they read sites like this and the daft dribble which regularly flows from the managers mouth , they will know full well all in the garden is far from rosey at portman road

  • Why not just sign the Olympic athletes, as footballing ability doesn't seem to be in his top 3 requisites. I agree that pace is essential, but is this another one of his mistakes after failing to recognise this over the last 16 months and 11 signings already (and 12 loanees). I'm surprised the 5ft 8in Paul Jewell is so keen on dimensions, it appears he would have never of selected himself.

  • Looing at the teams that are coming up from league 1 and teams down from the premier. Town are going to need more than a few tall players, more like a miracle. Looks like another battle with relegation if the few current players don't shape up.
