Ipswich Town target Jordan Hugill could be set to team-up with his former manager, Simon Grayson, at Sunderland, according to reports in the North East.

The £3m-rated Preston North End targetman, the subject of two unsuccessful bids of around £1.5 and £2m from the Blues in January, has been earmarked by the Black Cats, following the departures of Jermain Defoe, Fabio Borini and Victor Anichebe.

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy has made no secret of his admiration for Hugill, who has scored 20 goals in 85 games for the Lancashire club, since signing from Port Vale.

McCarthy is still in the hunt for a targetman to replace Daryl Murphy, who Norwich are keen on signing, but Grayson, who managed Hugill at Deepdale could sway the 25-year-old Middlesbrough-born man to join him at The Stadium of Light, having himself left Preston to replace David Moyes in the Black Cats’ hotseat last week.
