Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Cardiff City midfielder Emyr Huws in a multi-million pound deal, the Welshman signing a four-year contract.

The 23-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by Bluebirds’ boss Neil Warnock and returns to Portman Road where he quickly became a fans’ favourite, scoring three times in 13 games, during a four-month loan spell.

“I’m really happy to get it done and I’m delighted to sign up here,” he told iFollow Ipswich.

“It took a bit longer than expected but I’m really happy to get it all sorted.

“Now I’m looking forward to getting back and the season ahead.

“The fans were great with me last season, and were very positive towards me. I appreciate that support and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them again for Ipswich Town.”

Blules boss Mick McCarthy added: “We are delighted to have got the deal done. I’m sure the fans are thrilled as well.

“Emyr was outstanding for us last season. He was arguably our best player along with Tom Lawrence and he certainly made us a better team.

“He’s only 23 so there is improvement in him. I’m sure other clubs would have been interested in him but we’re delighted he’s back with us. He was different class when he was here.”

Llanelli-born Huws joined Cardiff from Wigan last summer, signing a three-year deal, but only made four appearances for the club before moving to Suffolk.

A youth player with Swansea and Manchester City, Huws made one FA Cup appearance for the latter, before moving on to Northampton and Birmingham on loan.

He joined Wigan in 2014 on a permanent deal and made 16 appearances for the Latics, before signing for Huddersfield on-loan a season later, where he scored five goals in 31 games.

Eleven-cap Welsh international Huws scored three times for Town last season, in the victory at Aston Villa, the draw at home to Brentford and, memorably, in April’s 3-1 home win against Newcastle United.

Elsewhere, the Blues have secured goalkeeper Dean Gerken on a new two-year deal, the stopper remaining at Portman Road until 2019.
