You could cut the tension with a knife during Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy’s pre-match press conference this lunchtime. Here’s what the Blues boss had to say about managing director Ian Milne’s comments regarding his future.
Q: What about your future? Might we expect an announcement in the next couple of weeks. It’s something Ian Milne, the managing director, alluded to (in a radio interview at the weekend). Maybe something around season ticket renewal time?
A: I heard that and I’ve heard that second hand now from you and from somebody else and at the minute I’d just say ‘mind your own business’ and everybody else.
I’m sick of talking about me and sick of talking about fans and reaction and all of that. Talk about the game and I’m cool. If not, I’m out of here.
Q: So it’s going to be the summer, then, that’s the next time we should be talking about things like that I would imagine?
A: I think I just... (places hands on desk as if he’ll leave)
Q: It’s something fans keep talking about, whether there would be some sort of announcement around season ticket time?
A: If you want to talk to me about Hull... Look, I’ve just said I am sick of talking about it.
I come in here every time and I’m just up to my tonsils with it. Let’s talk about something else. Ask me another question.
*After a brief exchange regarding Hull City*
Q: After the game on Saturday you said it wasn’t the time to go gung-ho, but with the games running out is it the time to go a little bit gung-ho to try and get the few wins needed to possibly get right up there?
A: I think somewhere between the lines, you all get confused and all want to be tacticians now and telling me how I should be playing.
I try and win the game, every single week. That’s what I do. Every week we play to win.
Q: Is league position really important if you end up outside the top six? Does it really matter where you finish?
A: Yeah it does, to me. Personal pride and to the players, absolutely.
It’s about how many games we can win, and not losing them, that’s it as well.
I always get reminded when I come in here if we’ve not won one or how many we’ve lost, and nobody’s asked me about any unbeaten run or ‘you’re ina good bit of form’. That’s strange, that. I always find that a little bit peculiar.
Q: I think in general fans are a little bit disappointed about the nature of the 0-0 on Saturday. It was a chance to kick on after two good away wins. Do you understand that?
A: I would say again that we played exactly the same way as he did at Sheffield Wednesday where we played really well and won.
Sheffield United, who had lost 3-0 at Fulham on the Tuesday night, maybe came and were toughened up. They are a good side.
We tried to win the game. But of course everybody else would want to pick the team. I get that.
Q: Looking back on the reverse fixture at Hull, Jordan (Spence) rescued a point at the end but it was a very good performance. How do you reflect on that - was it a point gained or three dropped?
A: When you equalise in the 88th minute it’s a point gained, yeah.
Q: It was a good performance that day wasn’t it?
A: Yeah, we played well.
Q: You’ve talked about playing exactly the same way home and away. Is that how it’s always been for you? Some managers might talk about playing a different way at home in front of your own fans.
A: I’m not some managers, am I.
Q: That’s you...
A: *Shrugs* I’m me.
Q: Goals have been hard to come by at home. Why do you think that is?
A: I said to you on Saturday I have no idea, we’re doing all the same things.
Maybe Joe Garner not playing, maybe Waggy playing lots of games, I don’t know because we’ve been doing the same work we’ve always been doing.
We’ll keep trying to score.
Q: The system you are playing with the three at the back...
A: Don’t talk to me about tactics.
Q: You’re getting clean sheets, you’re not losing many games, would you say the balance is more defensive than it is attacking?
A: I’m using the players I’ve got, pretty effectively sometimes. It might seem not at home but that’s the way it is.
