Jonny Williams has been impressing in training for Ipswich Town.

Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has received plenty of positive injury news ahead of a crunch Championship home double header against Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic.

Forward David McGoldrick has recovered from the minor knee injury which forced him to pull out of the Republic of Ireland squad last week, while Tom Lawrence’s groin/hip problem – which forced him to withdraw from the Wales squad – is not as bad as first feared, though he remains a major doubt for the weekend.

Midfielder Emyr Huws (hamstring) and Teddy Bishop (groin) have both rejoined training today, while striker Kieffer Moore – who missed the 3-1 defeat at Cardiff (groin) – is also fit again.

Loan duo Dominic Samuel and Jonny Williams have impressed in training following their long-term recoveries from a broken toe and shoulder/hamstring injuries respectively. They featured both featured for the Under-23s earlier this week.

“I’m not saying they’re all fit to start a game in the Championship but it’s nice to have them out training with us,” said McCarthy.

On Samuel, who is yet to feature for the first team since joining from Reading in January, the Blues boss said: “He’s done really well, he’s been quite impressive in training.”

On Crystal Palace loanee Williams, who hasn’t featured for the first team in 2017, McCarthy added: “He’s training really well. He’s in contention for the weekend. He’s somebody that can open them up, unlock a door, somebody with that little bit of magic. It’s lovely to have him fit again.”

The only bad news is that defender Tommy Smith has seen his flight back from international duty with New Zealand cancelled and will now not be back until 2pm on Friday.

Adam Webster and Luke Hyam (both ankle) remain sidelined, as does Giles Coke (knee). Steven Taylor continues to recover fully from a hamstring injury.
