Daryl Murphy was never going to celebrate scoring a goal against Ipswich Town.

Murphy enjoyed several successful years playing for Town, top scoring with 27 league goals in 2014/15 as he helped the Blues reach the Championship play-offs.

It was typical then, that he scored on his first return to Portman Road, for Newcastle United - the team he joined last August.

But the burly striker was never going to celebrate regardless of the result, which went in Town’s favour as they ran out as deserved 3-1 winners.

“I knew before the game that if I scored then I wasn’t going to celebrate,” said the Irishman, who clinically tucked away a 62nd-minute cross from Christian Atsu to pull the Magpies level at 1-1.

“I’ve had some good times here and I just wanted to show my respect.

“The goal was for nothing really, we still lost.”

Murphy continued: “We all knew it was going to be a tough game.

“I always said that if I ever had to play against Ipswich, that it’ll be a hard game because they’re a physical and very hardworking side with some good players.

“They made it difficult for us today, but we were nowhere near what we can be and what we should be. We can’t have any complaints about the result.”
