What Do You Want First, The Good News Or The Bad News?
The bad news was that Town lost on Saturday, the good news is that it was the first defeat in the last seven games. But given that defeat was against a side rock bottom of the division with only two previous victories this season it was akin to an amputee being told by his surgeon that 'The bad news is i've cut off the wrong leg, but the good news is the other one's getting better!
The performance at lowly Doncaster broadcast live to the nation will hardly send shockwaves through the Championship. With finishing about as accomplished as a painter on the forth rail bridge and conceeding a goal soft enough to feature in an 'Andrex' ad, a return to the Premiership looks about as likely as the afforementioned one legged man winning a butt kicking contest.
Its not the first time this season that a good performance has been followed by one far less commendable. Originally blamed on the 'Tinkerman's' constant changeing of personnel, the current fluctuation in form has no such criteria to give an explanation.
The priority aquisition for Jim when given his crock of gold was a twenty plus goal per season striker. At this moment in time I can't see one and at the same time historically it's what every promoted side, certainly in recent years have had in their armoury.
First team coach Brian Klug see's the next four fixtures as 'defining matches'. They will be no more defining than the first seventeen or less than the following twenty five. It's consistency that wins titles and promotions.
Four results against three serious promotion contenders and the 'Budgies' would be more than welcome if acheived but its the bread and butter victories at venues like 'The Keepmoat' that to my mind are more 'Defining'.
It was no suprise at the Norwich City shareholders meeting recently that Glen Roeder was questioned about the departure of at least one particular fans favourite from Carrow Road in close season. The answer from the troubled Norfolk Clubs manager was for them not to 'live in the past'.
What did suprise me though, was that in a room full of loyal 'Budgie' fans the next question asked wasn't "What past?"
