Roy's going nowhere - Clegg

IPSWICH Town chief executive Simon Clegg has angrily hit out at reports Roy Keane is about to be sacked as Ipswich boss.

Clegg was responding to claims that a board meeting was held on Sunday to discuss the team's current plight and Keane's position in particular.

But today Clegg furiously hit out that there was no such meeting: “The reports are absolute rubbish,” he said.

“I spoke to the media only recently and reiterated our full backing to the manager then and nothing has changed in our position.”

Clegg has indeed made it clear that Keane's position is not in question, and at the start of October with Town having not won a league game, said: “Roy continues to enjoy the complete and absolute support of the owner and myself. I very much feel I and the rest of the club support him and that will continue.”

Ironically the speculation of Keane's sacking comes with the Town boss on his best run at Portman Road, with Ipswich's draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday taking their unbeaten league run to six games.

However, Town's lowly league position is not clever, and both Clegg and owner Marcus Evans know wins, rather than draws, is the only way the Blues are going to climb the Championship table.

More booing around Portman Road at the end of Saturday's goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday will keep Clegg and Evans on their toes regarding the feelings among the fans, although one senses they are frustrated at having to again back a manager they have always said has their complete support.

If Town's unbeaten run is still intact after Sunday's Championship trek to Cardiff and a tricky trip to Bristol City six days later, then most Blues fans will take those results in good heart.

Follow that with two home games against Blackpool and Peterborough in the space of four days and by the time Christmas is almost upon us, the Championship table will have a far more definitive look to it for Blues supporters.

The question at Portman Road, however, will be, how does it look?

  • Major Soundbite - I am afraid all but the most deluded of Town fans knew Town would be going nowhere under Roy Keane - except backwards at a rate of knots the moment you made your (or the insible man's) daft appointment. Congratulations for now spotting the patently obvious.

  • Oh dear! this is sad news and a very bad day for all town fans! The fans only hope for any improvement this season, is for the inadequate keane to get the sack, or to walk out like he has previously done!!! So it will remain a long long fight against relegation and the town sinking into the abyss!!!

  • All we need is a good first team coach to come in and work with the management team to instal some good attacking values.

  • GOOD!! I wish certain sections of the media and the usual moaners, Keane-haters and bogus Ipswich supporters who invade this site would get off Roy Keane's back. Just because he wasn't always a "gentleman" on the football pitch in his playing days and because he walked out on Sunderland (with good reason - I don't like people who interfere with the way I work either) some vindictive members of the media love to keep "chipping away" at him. That would be bad enough but when that involves the football team I have supported since 1968 then it annoys me.

  • How come "ged scotts" comments always seem to get posted and mine never do ? Give someone else a chance. Full support for Roy and the boys from this quarter - don't lose your nerve and we will get stronger.

  • I think certain people should refrain from claiming they speak for "all town fans"! You certainly don't speak for me, nor for the majority of other fans who have posted here. I'm still behind the manager and the players because I've seen improvement in the way we're playing and working together. Yes I agree we need a proven goal scorer, but once we get one on board I'm sure things will start looking up.

  • Well the good news is that we now realise that relegation is a distinct possibility. In fact unless we conjure up some rapid improvement it’s almost a certainty. Interesting though to read Mr. Clegg say that there’s no way RK is going anywhere. Perhaps he doesn’t see the league position plight in the same light as we do. Given the past fiascos of Norwich and Leicester who repeatedly changed managers and still got relegated, perhaps it’s right that RK stays and tries to sort this unholy mess out. But mess it is and on top of our desperation to sign anybody who can score, we now have old “Flapper” back between the posts so all of a sudden the rock solid defence over the past few games looks vulnerable again. Strange question but does anybody know what Mr. Clegg does all day? Just thought I’d ask.
