MANAGER Roy Keane was a surprise speaker at the Ipswich Town Supporters' club's annual general meeting at the Legends Bar, Portman Road last night.

He took his place beside chief executive Simon Clegg and did not pull any punches when answering questions from the floor for 75 minutes.

Keane revealed that he has no regrets about taking the job, that he is sure despite being currently bottom of the table it will end up being a good season and that he may have to release players before he can bring new ones in.

He also admitted that selling Jordan Rhodes and loaning out Kevin Lisbie left him open to criticism and that gaining a top two place would be very difficult now, but he still held out hopes of qualifying for the play-offs.

And he invited fans to watch his players training at the club's Playford Road complex.

“I'm delighted I took this job,” said Keane, whose side are bottom of the Championship with one win in 15 games. “It was absolutely the right decision.

“I met owner Marcus Evans and was impressed and this is one reason I took the job.

“I tend to go on my gut feelings rather than make decisions after asking around.

“I like being left alone and to be treated with respect and this is what I've got.

“Some people prefer their privacy and I respect the owner for that.

“There was talk of a three-year contract but I felt more comfortable with two years as it would give me more of an edge. I like having an edge, and who knows perhaps there will be a contract extension at some time.

“If we are not in the Premier League in two years I will have failed, but I have set my heart on taking this club to promotion.

“It is a great club with wonderful fans and I want to be a top manager. I have made mistakes but judge me down the road.”

And talking about strengthening his squad, Keane said: “There are no imminent loan signings and I may look to the transfer window opening in January now.

“I have no complaints with the owner and chief executive over the backing they are giving me, but I made a mistake at Sunderland in overloading my squad.

“Having two or three unhappy players I okay, but seven or eight ganging up can have its problems.

“And I have to be realistic and perhaps look to letting players go before I can bring some in.”

Keane says that he is not shocked when he sees Rhodes and Lisbie scoring regularly and he confirmed that he intends to consider playing Lisbie on the striker's return from Colchester in January.

“Those decisions may not look like good decisions now but they may in the future,” said Keane.

“Good luck to Jordan and it was a chance I took to let him go after receiving a good offer and watching him in pre-season.

“Some players can make the jump from one division to a higher one, but others struggle to make an impact in a division above.

“I am not ruling out anything but we have made it very difficult for ourselves to gain automatic promotion this season.

“With a bit more luck we could be seven or eight points better off, but despite the poor start I still believe it will be a good season.

Keane said that he had nothing to hide and that fans can visit the club's training ground whenever they wish except Fridays.

“Ipswich are a family club and anybody can watch our practice games. The owner was over last week and we have nothing to hide.”

Keane is still keeping tabs on Senegalese international defender Ibrahima Faye who impressed in a reserve game against Norwich last week but there has been no further recent progress.

Clegg, who confirmed that the financial implications involved in any player Keane wanted to sign would be looked at sympathetically by himself and the owner, confirmed that a number of potential signings had been written off by the manager because of the price.

“There is only two more weeks for emergency loan signings and there is nothing imminent.”

And Clegg also revealed that Keane's unpublicised attendance at last night's meeting of the club's diehard supporters was to ensure that the rank and file benefited.

  • Anyone think that it could be one of the doom and gloomers sitting closest to us in this photo?

    Gavin Turner, Ipswich

  • so Rob did you go along to ask all those questions you have been gagging to ask bluster Keane all season, um no thought not, all mouth no action! on a positive good to see Keane facing the fans, i am sure he came up against some tough questions. Lets hope he is right about turning things around, time will tell i guess, i for one have everything crossed and my rose tinted glasses have been put away for the winter.

  • Can I point out to those who criticise my realistic, truthful, comments on this site, they read what keane says "IPSWICH ARE A FAMILY CLUB". I feel many of keanes comments were said with tongue in cheek and cannot be taken seriously! We all know town have no chance of making the play-offs, so why say town are? If town dont get promoted within 2 years of keane taking over, he has failed? Is he going to walk away and resign then if they dont? He has made mistakes! my god you can say that again keane! That part of his speech, I feel is about the only thing he said that could be taken as gospel!!! So to finish I will say again, keane you are not the right man to run a family club like Ipswich, town need a Robson style manager with man-management skills!!!

  • Surprised you were not there last night Steroo, or don't you have the bottle to put your inane comments direct to Roy's face. Get a life - somewhere else!!

    Rob Bill

  • Totally agree with Rob Bill, regarding play-offs why not 31 matches yet possible 93pts. 20 wins from these 31 may get us in to the paly-offs i'm sure in excess of 70pts would surfice.

  • RK isn’t one for public appearances and I can’t see many managers willing to come face to face with diehard supporters after winning only 1 league game in 15. Listening to Keano speak and you know just as he was hungry for success as a player nothing has changed as a manager, he wants success at OUR football club. As he stated “If we are not in the Premier League in two years I will have failed, but I have set my heart on taking this club to promotion. This is why a large percentage of fans are still backing him to bring success to our wonderful football club but as they say “Rome wasn’t built in a day” remember Jim didn’t achieve anything in 3 years!! As much as I wanted Jim to succeed if he had been in the same situation last night the fans would have tore him to shreds…. Up The Town!!!!

  • So i ask again Rob and Ged if you feel you have such valid questions of Keane where were you at the AGM? Easy being faceless and making all sorts of comments isn't it, takes a real man to stand up face to face and place their point of view.......I rest my case.

    lady blue

  • Lady Blue.... Marcus and I prefer to back Ipswich to the hilt in our very different ways without being seen in public. I had great faith in the Major earning another chunk of his £250,000 by waffling to a couple of dozen pensioners and he did an excellent job... everybody concerned still thinks the offshore investment can make the play offs (well maybe for another 48 hours when reality will begin to sink in)

    Rob Steroo

  • If thats the case then Ged you are a hypocrite of the highest order, moaning about Mr Evans and his faceless approach when you are singing from the same hymn book.

    lady blue

  • Well that sums up the two and a half stooges then (Scott, Steroo & Smallpiece)....Wind up merchants to umpteenth degree. They have now been sussed completely by their spineless comments that they cannot defend or validate. Given the chance to air their views personally, like everyone else they hide away behind the facade of their stupidity which they find to be humourous, which it is not..I am now convinced that these three are one and the same person, because the prose are starting to sound familiar and repetitive just like their ridiculous posts..So all genuine people on here who like a proper debate about the club, and enjoy good banter, I will lead from the front here....PLEASE IGNORE ANY FUTURE POSTS WRITTEN UNDER THE NAMES OF STREEO, SCOTT & SMALLPIECE...DO NOT RESPOND, THAT WILL MAKE THEM WORSE. Also it may not be a bad idea if we all sent an e mail to the site administrator asking for any posts by these three be removed..all in favour say COYB!!!

    Paul Assirati, Ipswich

  • I have never, nor will ever have any doubts about the commitment to this club from roy keane, every manager makes mistakes , there isnt one in the premier league whose signings have all worked out, i would say at the moment there is only one which looks a major mistake, and two or three which look inspired. keane isnt the sort of bloke to hide behind an assistant coach and i admire his honesty with the fans and press alike. Of all the managers we have had since robson this one has the best chance of beoming as big a hero

    KEVIN FRANCIS, beccles

  • Well said Kevin Francis..to the point and 100% correct..now forget all the rubbish that has been strwen on here and lets be positive and move forward..

    Paul Assirati, Ipswich

  • Paul Assirati. Im sure you think you are "god", just because 100% of people on this site dont agree with your views, there is no need to through your rattle out of the pram!!! Its called democracy and having opinions of your own, remember with an Italian name like yours, perhaps you have dictatorship ideals!!!
