“WE needed someone to do something different,” said Ipswich Town manager Roy Keane about David Wright's winning goal against Derby County.

“I don't know what he was doing up there from left back jumping above 6ft 4in defenders.

“David Wright is an example to all the players. He is a top professional who buckles down and does his job.

“It may have been our worst display for four or five games, but we deserved the win, and the monkey is off our backs.

“We just about edged it and we never really got going with their extra man in midfield making them difficult to break down.

“It was not pretty, in fact it was ugly, and from the opening minutes you could sense the strange atmosphere.

“It was a bit flat, but we won with Pablo Counago and Tamas Priskin doing well when they came on giving us a little more spark after Jon Stead had run his socks off.”

Keane led the chorus of thanks to the home fans adding: “They probably weren't happy with the performance but I'm sure they'll be happy with the victory.

“It's the least they deserve and their support is much appreciated.

“It gave the players that extra bit of energy, especially in the last ten or 15 minutes.

“To go so many games without victory is unacceptable, but this win is a reward for everyone.

“Results affect a lot of people and it's nice for everyone, but it's only one victory.

“We'll be working hard again through the week and anyone who thinks we're going to relax obviously doesn't know me very well.”

  • Just as well Derby had a very weakened team otherwise town would still be looking for their first win

    DOUGLAS POOLEY, IPSWICH

  • Bluster keane, at last a sensible statement comes from you after 6 months of rubbish!!! "We needed someone to do something different" my god at last I can agree!!! Yes bluster keane, resign NOW and get out and someone can do exactly what you said!!!

    ged scott

  • GED SCOTT...Do you go to the matches|? Actually, Mr Pooley..Do You go???? Another question...If Keane goes, who do we get that will shut you down on moaning?????

    Ian Bryant

  • That's just it, Ian ...... they don't know. All they do is say "Get rid of Keane!" but don't name an alternative manager who would do a better job and who is available to come here. Derby's weakened side was overstated (as football club managers do) anyway. I checked out the Derby players' appearances for this season and there were only two or three that haven't played much for the first team. Even if it was a totally reserve side we faced, that could go against us as the players could fight harder to try to keep their place in the first team. So many ifs and buts in life! Just face the facts (ged's favourite phrase) we beat Derby 11 against 11.

  • Kenny M. Oh those rose coloured glasses you wear are working overtime!!! 11 against 11? What if it was Man Utd 11 against a Pub team 11? Still 11 against 11 my friend!!! No good splitting hairs, the FACTS NEVER LIE!!! Derby had 16 players injured, if they had a full squad of players available, undoubtedly the town would STILL be without a win! Its Marcus Evans job to pick the right manager to succeed at a family club like town, not mine. My point of view is bluster keane, is certainly not the right man for this, and should be sacked before its too late to get a new gentleman manager in place, of this arrogant one there at the moment. Now do you understand???

  • If I was Major Soundbite looking to impress my invisible master I would interview a minimum of five people with a fine track record of making the most of very thin resources and placing trust in obviously talented young players that might need a bit of guidance. Or somebody with a plan to put right 8 years of abject management and decline without constantly shunting players in and out - and obviously the nous to sort out a huge and bloated squad filled with pointless signings on fat contracts. That might involve trawling far more successful clubs like doncaster, peterborough and scunthorpe.... not to mention the 46 clubs still lower in the league than ourselves

  • ok Rob name your five.........
