Colchester United keeper, Sam Walker, wants the U’s to repay their suffering supporters with a win over Essex rivals Southend United tonight.

The U’s were booed off after Saturday’s dismal 1-0 defeat to National League South side Oxford City, in the first round of the FA Cup, but they can go some way to making amends by beating their near-neighbours to reach the knock-out stages of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Walker said: “How we recover is more of a mental thing. On a positive note, we do always seem to bounce back well, from adversity and disappointment.

“So hopefully that is something that will be the case this week, to use that bounce-back-ability again.

“We have a local derby, and it will be good for morale and for everyone, especially the fans, if we can win that one.

“There were boos at the end of Saturday’s game, and we deserved that at the end – there’s no hiding from that. We weren’t good enough.

“So we want to get one over Southend, and repay the fans.

“We have to make sure that Saturday’s loss doesn’t affect our whole season. Football is full of so many highs and lows, but I can’t remember feeling so low after a game for many years.

“But we must stay together. We’ve got to try as hard as we can to put that to one side and get back on the train and go again,” added Walker.

Referring to Saturday’s Cup shocker, Walker continued: “It was so disappointing, and it’s something that we will never be able to clear this from our CVs. Whenever the FA Cup comes around, and we are asked whether we have ever been knocked out by a lower-league team, then ‘yes we have’ – we all have now.

“That is very difficult to take, and it will very sore over the coming days. But we must go again at Southend and then get back to it in the league on Saturday,” added Walker.
