Colchester United are currently enjoying their best start to a season for 17 years.

The U’s have amassed 16 points from their first nine league matches, thanks to four wins, four draws and just one defeat, which equals the 16-point haul from a possible 27 achieved by the class of 2001-02.

And you have to go back to the 1991-92 campaign, the U’s second of two seasons in the Conference (now National League), to find an even better start to a campaign – Roy McDonough’s men accumulated 18 points from their first nine fixtures, on their way to the title and promotion back to the Football League.

John McGreal’s men are preparing for back-to-back home matches, starting with this Saturday’s game against Bury followed by next Tuesday evening’s visit of Yeovil Town.

The squad of 2001-02, with Steve Whitton at the helm, did not make the most of their fine start to the season, which saw them lead the League One table at the end of August. After their successful first nine games, they won only three of their next 12 and eventually finished in 15th.
