Matt Paterson, the man who dumped Colchester United out of the FA Cup, just loves the magic of the Cup.

Paterson’s precision header, inside 34 minutes of the second half, earned non-league Oxford City a place in the second round at the expense of their under-performing League Two hosts.

While the U’s were well below par on the day, National League South visitors Oxford played out of their skins. They certainly deserved their victory.

“It’s nice for a team like us to get through,” enthused Paterson.

“We have a lot of young lads in the team, so not many of them have had an opportunity to play in the FA Cup (beyond the qualifying rounds)

“I was a little bit isolated up front today, but we all put in one hell of a shift and this result really helps out the club, financially.

“The magic of the FA Cup lives on, and now we want to kick on from here,” added Paterson, who was formerly on the books of Southampton, Southend, Burton and Aldershot.

Striker Paterson, 28, was in the Gosport Borough team that lost 6-3 at home to the U’s in the FA Cup three seasons ago.
